Students are Back and Harassment is Up

Description:

So all summer long, I've been walking between my office on North College and the new Baker Center about once a week, meeting with people, going to the post office and so on. The construction guys working on the old Baker Center had, up until this morning, seemed pretty nice. Early on in the summer, I had braced myself for potential harassment the first couple of times I walked by and was pleasantly surprised when nothing happened. Over the following two months, I relaxed, and even smiled and nodded as I walked by, but things were different today. Students are now back in town. The population, and traffic, has doubled. The three men taking their break from working, sitting on the concrete wall by the college gate eating fast food failed to contain themselves today. As two girls walked passed them on the sidewalk directly in front of them, I saw their eyes perk up and look these young women up and down. They began whispering between themselves, smiling and joking. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I could tell it wasn't respectful. I'm not sure if this counts as bystander intervention or not, but I shot them a mean glare and they seemed to get the message. They immediately turned red and turned their eyes down to their feet as they took the last few bites of their lunch.
